UN Guarantees Support on Providing Aid and Establishing a Humanitarian Corridor for Myanmar

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, met with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar, Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, to exchange views and discuss matters related to the close cooperation between ASEAN and the UN, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

During the meeting, Dr. Heyzer affirmed that the United Nations guarantees its full support and participation on the provision of aid assistance, and the establishment of a humanitarian corridor for Myanmar.

According to a press release issued on Thursday, 31 March 2022, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn began the discussion by briefing his interlocutor on the activities, challenges and outcomes of his meeting with relevant stakeholders during his first visit to Myanmar on 21-23 March 2022. He particularly stressed the three urgent priorities of making steps toward ending the violence, facilitating the distribution of humanitarian assistance, and building trust and an enabling environment to start an inclusive and constructive dialogue among all concerned parties.

In response, Dr. Heyzer acknowledged the difficulties Cambodia faces as the current ASEAN Chair and further commended the efforts of Prime Minister Hun Sen and Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn in paving the way for a solution to be found on the ongoing Myanmar crisis.

Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn and Dr. Noeleen Heyzer also discussed the organization of a consultative meeting on humanitarian assistance and the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to ensure a smooth and safe process of assistance delivery to Mynamar. In this regard, the UN Special Envoy assured the Deputy Prime Minister of the UN’s full support engagement.

Additionally, the two Special Envoys also discussed the possible role played by some countries in the region and the international community as a whole in finding a settlement to the crisis in Myanmar.

This marked the second meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn and Dr. Noeleen Heyzer since 13 December 2021.
